RIDGE

Tales on Heartides were limited. I'd read some stories about spellcasters, but I'd never known why they had been banished from the central lands. After hearing Aayanna recall the events that led them here, and about her disagreement with Estelle, I couldn't help but remain on high alert.

Aayanna began to leave the boat and a wave of hesitation fell on me. I knew she could feel my emotions, but I ignored the thought as I grabbed her hand and walked alongside her to the edge of the land. Ice covered every inch, and I was thankful for the extra clothing Violet had forced me to pack.

I had half expected Aayanna to remove her hand from mine as we approached the waiting people, but she kept a firm grasp, even as two white-haired figures came hurtling towards us.

Ripping her from my hold, Saphielle wrapped Aayanna in her arms, speaking incoherent words into her ears, muffled by the layers of clothing.

“Aayanna, it’s so great to see you. We missed you at the palace.” As she pulled back, glistening tears evaded Aayanna's eyes, but these weren't the same tears of sadness that often fell from her. These were ones of joy, ones that were mirrored back at her from her friend. There was a strong affection between the two, and I was silently thanking the woman for staying by her side.

Saphielle waved her hand towards her brother, but he didn't notice—his eyes too busy staring daggers at me.

Noticing the direction of Shem’s glare, Aayanna moved to stand beside me, and her voice spoke boldly as she stared at the man.

“Ridge has been a vital part of my safe arrival here.

Please show him the respect that he deserves.” Her words were spoken in a tone that addressed them both. However, it was clear they were aimed at Shem, who was now rolling his eyes.

Ignoring her assertiveness, he took hold of her arm. “My Queen, we have arranged you a chamber in our residence.” Shem began to pull Aayanna towards a clearing, when she snatched her arm from him.

“Ridge and I have somewhere to stay, thank you.”

“Where?” I didn't like how the white-haired ferret spoke to her. Regardless of their friendship, she was their ruler and deserved to be spoken to as such.

I started to move towards the pair, when footsteps crunching against the snow caught my attention. A woman appeared from the distance, floating slowly in our direction. Her skin was icy white, and strands of deep purple hair whipped around her.

She was dressed in black armour, not the kind you would see on guards, but a light steel that covered her from head to toe. The light from a green emblem glowing against her chest. I’d seen the same one on Noralie in the form of a broach. It obviously had something to do with their roles in the Kingdom.

Silence fell as she stopped in front of us; deep red eyes pivoted around the faces of our group. Aayanna was the first to speak,

“Estelle, thank you for welcoming us to your home.
